This Swine Life: Hog Named 6-7 Granted Clemency by Miami-Dade Mayor.
It might not have been at the identical stature as sparing holiday birds, but the Miami-Dade County mayor had her own ceremonial pardon event this week by ritually sparing the life of a swine named Six Seven.
Daniella Levine Cava performed the seasonal stunt at the Cuban-style Latin Cafe 2000 in the center of Miami’s iconic Little Havana neighborhood.
“This pig is innocent. She is worthy of this pardon. She has committed zero crimes,” stated the mayor in a speech with clear references to the vast quantity of executive clemencies issued since the beginning of a new presidential term.
“If we disregard eating half a dozen apples per day,” the mayor added. “May this pig enjoy a long and happy life without fear.”
The event, either celebrating or rejecting the area's customary feast of consuming swine during the holidays, was created to mirror the annual turkey pardoning at the White House.
The swine, donated by a Coral Gables firefighter, was named for the popular vernacular phrase of young people shouting “six seven” – originating from a rap song lyric – often without clear purpose. The craze became so pervasive that a prominent word reference recently declared “six-seven” its annual vocabulary selection.
A New Life
The pardoned swine is now scheduled to spend its days at a countryside refuge “distant from barbecues and spits”, according to the ceremony's official statement.
“The annual pig pardon has become a cherished method to kick off the holiday season,” said Eric Castellanos, in a notably cheerful message.
“It captures the essence of Miami: joyful, multicultural, and rooted in traditions that unite the community. Each year, we are delighted to mark culture and compassion in a way only Miami can.”
Attendees enjoyed a plant-based fare of croquettes and Cuban coffee as they marked the pig's pardon.
