The Young Spinner Earns Unexpected Selection in English Test Series Team
The English team has chosen a twelve-player selection just two days before the opening Test match, with Shoaib Bashir earning a surprise place.
The 22-year-old’s selection indicates that the visiting team will wait until the morning of the first Test to determine whether the venue conditions favor a pace-heavy attack or the inclusion of a spin bowler.
Both pace bowlers are included in the selected group, showing there are no doubts about their pace bowler’s condition.
The other seamers complete the attack, with Carse most likely to miss out if the spinner makes the starting XI.
Pitch Factors Lean Toward Pace Bowlers
The England coach had been anticipated to opt for an all-seam attack on a ground that has staged five previous Tests.
In those games, 134 wickets have been taken by seamers, with only a small number to spin bowling.
Of those spin dismissals, Australia’s Nathan Lyon has claimed the bulk, while all visiting spinners together have just a handful.
At a venue known for its pace and bounce, and whose groundsman, the pitch preparer, stated that these traits are “permanent and not going to change,” a side loaded with seamers remains the probable decision.
Alternative Choices Considered
There had been rumors that the all-rounder could be parachuted into the side to provide some spin while also strengthening the batting lineup.
But the coach has chosen to keep faith with Bashir, having stated earlier this year that he would be his first-choice spinner for the series.
Earlier, Lyon commented on Bashir as “OK,” adding that “from my perspective, Jack Leach is still the English top slow bowler.”
“It is a massive role, and it can be a massive challenge for bowlers who lack experience in the past in these conditions,” Lyon remarked of slow bowling in Australian Tests.
“I won't let my secrets out so opponents come out and excel out here.”
