The United Kingdom, United Nations, and European Union Denounce a ‘Gross Injustice’ of Jimmy Lai’s Two-Decade Imprisonment.

The judicial ruling of media publisher , a UK passport holder Jimmy Lai to 20 years in prison in Hong Kong has drawn widespread criticism. Human rights organizations and several nations have labeled the security-related charges politically motivated.

Widespread Disapproval and Calls for Release

UK Foreign Secretary Yvette Cooper stated that the lengthy imprisonment amounts to a de facto life term for the elderly man. She described the trial as being driven by political motives pursuant to legislation aimed at quieting Beijing's detractors. The Foreign Secretary demanded Hong Kong's authorities to end his ordeal and release him to his family.

“This outcome demonstrates how the vague and overly broad clauses of Hong Kong’s national security legislation are subject to interpretation in contravention of universal rights standards,” said the UN rights chief Volker Türk.

An EU spokesperson, Anitta Hipper, stated the EU “condemns” the conclusion of the judicial process and pushed for his swift liberation without preconditions.

Context of the Prosecution

Jimmy Lai, the force that established the now-shuttered Apple Daily tabloid, was detained following the introduction of a sweeping legal statute in Hong Kong. The law was introduced by Chinese authorities after extended demonstrations backed by Lai's media outlet.

He was ultimately convicted on allegations encompassing colluding to publish subversive content and plotting to collaborate with external actors. The second set of accusations were pursuant to the disputed legislation.

A Son’s Anguish

The activist's child, Sebastien, conveyed that his father is afraid of passing away in isolation separated from his loved ones. The legal team labeled him the “globally most notable political prisoner” currently incarcerated.

Sebastien Lai said that while the outcome was foreseen, its announcement felt worse than imagined, yet it provided some “relief” that the court process had concluded.

International Ramifications

The sentencing has influenced the bilateral relationship. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer claimed to have mentioned Lai’s case in talks with President Xi Jinping earlier this year. However, any potential progress in securing his freedom remains unclear.

Sebastien Lai asked the upside to a visa-free travel agreement between the UK and China, stating it felt “somewhat insensitive.”

Government Reactions

In contrast, the governments in Hong Kong and Beijing applauded the court's decision. Hong Kong’s leader John Lee claimed the sentence manifested that “justice is served.”

The mouthpiece of China’s foreign ministry, Lin Jian, labeled Lai the “chief architect” behind the 2019-2020 demonstrations and asserted the legal case had been “legitimate and lawful.” He called on foreign countries to avoid meddling in what he termed China's internal issues.

A Symbolic Case

Media freedom advocates called Lai as a figure representing declining journalistic independence in Hong Kong. Reporters Without Borders' director general said it was a “bleak moment for those who value a free press.”

Given an almost 100% conviction rate for national security offences, Lai’s harsh punishment is viewed as the most severe yet imposed under the disputed law.
