During the bulk of the concluding season of the popular Netflix show, Holly Wheeler and Max are held captive in a realm of memories built from the past of Henry Creel. Their quest for an escape route in "Escape from Camazotz" forces them to relive a defining event from Henry's childhood—a moment that potentially carries the key to defeating him for good.

A Journey Into the Mine Shaft

After locating Max in the mental landscape known as Camazotz, it becomes clear she is hiding out in a grotto that Henry avoids at all costs. By leaving the lens cap on a viewing device taken from Henry's old home allows Holly to realize that the danger lies outside of the cave. By aligning her view through the cap, she and Max tumble into a abandoned tunnel.

There, they witness a child version of Henry encounter an man who is hurt and scared. As the boy offers aid, the man reacts violently, hitting him in the hand. In a desperate act of self-defense, Henry strikes the man down with a rock. "Was this the turning point?" Holly asks tearfully. Essentially, yes, but the event went deeper than a defensive killing.

Like many elements this season, the full story behind the events in the tunnel was first explored the stage play The First Shadow.

An Interdimensional Incident and A Spy's Mission

This backstory explains the infamous Philadelphia Experiment, which allegedly sent a U.S. Navy ship into a plane known as the Abyss. It faced creatures, and the lone returnee was the captain, who returned in a unresponsive state with an altered blood type.

That survivor's offspring, the future Dr. Brenner, sought to replicate this phenomenon in the Nevada desert. But a disloyal lab worker pilfered lab samples to hand over to the Soviets, who were keen to start their version of the tests. That traitor in the mine shaft is that employee.

The Briefcase's Contents

Based on what is revealed about his research, the briefcase would assuredly have vials of the unique blood type. At that moment, Henry is wounded and bleeding. Exposure likely occurred upon handling the contents, leading to the development of his psychic abilities—traits he would inadvertently transfer to the test subjects Brenner would experiment on.

A second theory, the box could have held exotic matter that was destined to travel to Hawkins Laboratory, where it helps stabilize the mirror dimension. *The First Shadow* reveals that Henry somehow wound up in the Abyss, reappearing hours later fundamentally changed. As a youth, he fights the influence of a malevolent force, much like how Will was possessed by the shadow monster in the past.

Confronting Terror

Henry's enduring terror of that cave demonstrates how profoundly traumatic the encounter was for him. Even as he orchestrates the Hive Mind and attempts to pull the Abyss into Hawkins, a piece of the scared boy remains. Fear is his tool, and the narrative points to a final confrontation between the monster and Will, who has confronted his greatest terrors to become stronger.

His confrontation has taken a weapon from Vecna. Furthermore, Will now is aware of what Vecna himself fears, potentially giving him a decisive edge in the ultimate battle to come.
