The Duke of York gives up his honor as York's Duke.

Royal figure under scrutiny
The royal has encountered increasing scrutiny over his links with the convicted sex offender.

He is surrendering his titles, such as the Duke of York, he has declared in a own words.

He has been under increasing attention over his links with convicted criminal Jeffrey Epstein, with requests for the royal household to take measures against him.

That now appears to have caused the figure deciding to voluntarily hand back his designations and to relinquish participation of the Order of the Garter.

In his announcement he said he continued to "firmly dispute the accusations against me".

"In discussion with the King, and my close and wider family, we have decided the continued accusations about me take away from the duties of the monarch and the Royal Family," said a announcement from the royal.

"I have decided, as I always have, to put my duty to my relatives and country first.

"I uphold my choice five years ago to withdraw from official duties.

"With His Majesty's consent, we feel I must now go a additional measure. I will therefore no longer use my title or the honours which have been conferred upon me. As I have said previously, I firmly refute the claims against me."

He has faced a series of controversies, including a court case he ended with Virginia Giuffre, questions about his money matters and his association with an alleged Chinese spy.

He will continue to be a royal - but will stop to be the the Duke, a title bestowed from his mother, the late Queen Elizabeth.

The prince had already stopped to be a "working royal" and had given up the use of his HRH title and no longer appeared at official royal events. His status now will be even more diminished.

His ex-wife will be known as Sarah Ferguson and no longer Duchess of York, but their children will continue to have the designation of royal princess.

He has been under strong scrutiny over his associations with disgraced financier the financier, more lately featuring questions about when he had actually severed contact.

In his television appearance, the royal had said that he had ended all links with the financier after they had been photographed together in New York in late 2010.

But correspondence sent in February 2011 later came to light implying that the prince had confidentially remained in touch with Epstein, for example exchanging a message: "Stay in contact and we'll meet again soon!"

There had been mounting annoyance in Buckingham Palace at the controversies that persisted to surround the prince.

Soon a late publication by the accuser will be issued which is anticipated to draw additional focus on the royal's involvement with Ms Giuffre and Epstein.
