In a recent appearance, actor Jude Law remarked he had no concerns about backlash for playing the Russian leader in a new film. This production, however, may align too neatly with the carefully constructed version promoted by Russian state media that, within Russia, it reads as a compliment rather than a challenge.

The Manufactured Strongman

Over a long period, the Kremlin and the country's entertainment industry have collaborated to craft a made-to-measure persona of the president. This figure is an infallible strategist devoid of flaws, an ex-intelligence officer reimagined as a local 007 who consistently understands more than he reveals.

Cinematic Reinforcement

One recent example is a TV series released last fall, directed by a pro-government filmmaker. The protagonist is a invented blue-eyed lieutenant colonel inexplicably chosen to “rescue” the nation from chaos. While the character's name Mikhail, the implication is clear: the savior must be a known figure from the secret services.

Western portrayals often end up buttressing this same narrative instead of undercutting it. A new film inspired by a bestselling satirical novel sets out to undermine the Putin cult by framing him not as a cause but as a symptom, shifting the narrative weight to the spin doctors surrounding him.

The Fable of the Hesitant President

On screen, the president is shown as having been chosen by powerful oligarchs to steady the country because he is “young, athletic and a spy”. The oligarchs approach him and practically plead him to become president. His response is that he would rather govern from the background, seeking permanent power.

This tale is a key piece of state propaganda: the detached, unwilling mastermind guided by fate. In reality, these events ever happened.

The Truth Behind the Selection

Nobody ever begged him to take the job. The position was in essence a selection process with no shortage of contenders. At the centre to this process stood a powerful businessman from the Yeltsin era who expected to run the country in practice.

• His list featured several politicians, including an opposition leader later murdered and a former spy chief.
• Per a journalist who researched his rise, the chosen candidate merely met the required parameters: obedient, from the intelligence world, and not a communist or a liberal.
• A businessman familiar with the events stated the primary requirement was manageability and faithfulness, not strength.

Building the 007 Persona

Analysts concur that the notion of him as a powerful KGB spy was constructed retrospectively. Claims about his “recruitment work” in East Germany do not stand up to scrutiny. In essence, he was an administrator and technical tasks, a mid-level functionary not involved with actual agent work.

Interestingly, the move to depicting him as a “007” may in part have been triggered by the actor's debut as 007. His harder version prompted local outlets and social media to make comparisons with Putin. Mashup posters swapping the actor's likeness with his appeared on Moscow streets, feeding the increasing trend to frame him as a local secret agent.

A Propaganda Win?

Given the casting, an actor well-liked by viewers there, the Kremlin are likely to seize the chance to frame his casting as a minor diplomatic triumph. The film's exclusion of public dissent, the political rivals, or prominent activists in the story, even though it includes recent years, is a welcome aspect for state propaganda.

In Russian cinema, Putin is often an all-powerful presence who never appears directly. His influence is hinted at through photographs or calls “from above”. In this new film, he at last gets a famous actor's visage—one that may inadvertently validate the exact legends it might seek to question.
