Pupils Fight Back Against AI-Taught College Class: "We Might Have Simply Used ChatGPT"

Several learners at a British institution voiced significant frustration when discovering their technology course was largely taught through artificial intelligence.

New Path Dreams Diminished

James and another participant were among forty-one participants who started a software development course expecting to move into tech careers through a state-backed training scheme.

Yet their hopes were rapidly lowered when they faced AI-generated slides being read by an synthetic voice.

“If we submitted assignments that was created by AI, we would be kicked out from the university,” stated James during a captured confrontation with his teacher.

Repeated Complaints and University Response

Participants multiple times raised worries about the computer-generated resources, however the college seems to have persisted using computer-created materials.

Interestingly, the college upholds rigorous guidelines controlling learner use of AI, saying that presenting artificially created work constitutes academic misconduct.

Expanding Pattern in Higher Education

The scenario echoes a larger trend across educational institutions increasingly employing AI tools for education, course material generation, and customized evaluation.

  • Current studies suggest nearly a quarter of UK educators now use AI in their educational practices
  • Official documents have praised generative AI's potential to revolutionize education
  • Yet many students find the experience discouraging rather than innovative

Revealing Indications of AI Generation

Participants detected several clues pointing to computer-created resources:

  1. Mixed language patterns between US and UK English
  2. Suspicious file titles
  3. Generic information with periodic allusions to inappropriate US laws
  4. Voiceover unexpectedly changing to a foreign accent before switching back

Student Disappointment and Future Worries

James expressed serious concern about his professional future, stating he felt locked with this course” after putting significant time.

Another participant, undergoing a career change, said he had selected the program for meaningful knowledge rather than just a credential.

“To be sat there with material that is just not deserving of someone's time,” he remarked, “while you could be using that time really engaging with something meaningful, is genuinely disappointing.”

Regardless of university statements about maintaining educational quality, learners felt the concluding addition of human instructors was “too little, too late” to address their fundamental concerns.
