Offspring of Ex- South African Head of State Jacob G Zuma Rejects Terror-Related Charges as Court Case Starts
The daughter of former South African Leader Jacob Zuma has entered a not guilty plea to terror allegations at the beginning of her court case in the coastal city of Durban.
Duduzile Zuma-Sambudla, 43 years old, is being tried over comments she published on social media in the past during violent protests in South Africa that followed the apprehension of her dad.
A seven-day period of chaos in several parts of the country in mid-2021, including theft and arson, caused at least three hundred dead and led to damage worth an projected $2.8bn (£2.2 billion).
She has been alleged of fuelling this violence and faces accusations of incitement to commit terror-related activities and civil unrest.
Background of the Case
The protests were concentrated in the provinces of Gauteng and KwaZulu-Natal and followed the ex-leader's apprehension for defying a legal directive to appear as a witness at an inquiry into claims of impropriety while he was serving as president.
The defendant has repeatedly refuted the accusations against her, with her lawyer previously describing the prosecution's evidence as weak.
She has also repeatedly said the charges against her were an attempt to address political disputes with her dad after he started his own party and ran against the ANC.
Support and Legal Defense
This was reinforced by the Zuma foundation, which said the case was an "misuse of authority" and a "organized effort" of "politically motivated and familial targeting" against the ex-leader and his kin.
A handful of supporters from her group, her party, appeared outside the judicial building, while her parent and other organization officials participated in the proceedings inside.
The defense has argued that the evidence presented by government lawyers is inadequate and lacks compelling evidence for a conviction.
