Alina Habba has stepped down as the chief federal prosecutor in the state. This decision was prompted by a legal ruling that questioned her right to serve.
Attorney General's Statement
The head of the Justice Department, the Attorney General, confirmed her stepping down on the start of the week. She commented that the appeals court finding made it impossible for Habba to perform her duties.
"But do not mistake following the order as giving up," she wrote. "This battle will now reach across the country."

Habba's exit was triggered by a US appeals court found that she had been unlawfully serving as the top prosecutor. This judgment is expected to impact many legal proceedings in New Jersey.
The court said that a temporary posting that bypassed Senate approval violated the Federal Vacancies Reform Act.
