McLaren Racing Blames Competitors for Piastri-Norris Collision

Tire detaches from McLaren after contact between team drivers

A wheel flies off the McLaren of Lando Norris after he collided with team-mate Oscar Piastri at the start of the United States Grand Prix sprint event.

McLaren Formula 1 bosses Brown and Stella attributed competitors for the incident between Piastri and Lando Norris at the beginning of the US GP sprint event.

The Australian driver, leading Norris in the standings by twenty-two points, crashed into his fellow McLaren driver after making contact with the Hulkenberg.

The incident took both McLaren drivers from the event, along with the Alonso, who was on the inside of Hulkenberg.

Team Executives Express Disappointment Over Incident

Zak Brown, McLaren Racing's chief executive officer, commented to broadcasters that some of the driving at the front was "unprofessional", stating: "Clearly Hulkenberg hit Piastri and he had no reason being where he was."

McLaren F1 team principal Stella added: "Our feeling is that we are displeased that we were denied the chance to race."

"It's surprising that some racers with a lot of expertise don't act with appropriate caution. Enter the initial turn, ensure you don't damage competitors and continue."

McLaren suggested that the team principal was referring to both the Sauber driver and Alonso.

Differing Perspectives on the Crash

However, former champion Damon Hill, providing analysis for BBC Radio 5 Sports Extra, said he thought the Australian had not shown enough awareness of the dangers of the opening turn of an Formula 1 event when he decided to cut back to try to pass Norris.

Piastri had a better start than the Briton and at first challenged on the outside on the ascending approach to the turn.

However he then cut back in an attempt to get a run on Norris on the exit, only to collide with the Sauber driver.

Racer Comments After the Incident

The McLaren driver said: "Not ideal but I did not see what happened, I tried to move inside on Norris and we were both quite distant from the apex and then were struck and it sent me into Norris. Unfortunate."

His teammate commented: "I just got hit, right? I was not at fault. Behind us things happened and I just got unlucky and got hit because of it. I don't know. I need to review a bit more thoroughly. It's more people behind just being a bit careless and we are the consequence of that."

Alonso said: "At one point I believed I was in the correct position on the inner side, but some cars came very fast from the outer side switching back and then I was there in the center."

Hulkenberg, who had earned a best qualifying fourth place, said: "Big frustrations. All the good work from yesterday in the bin. Just messy."

"Oscar turned in pretty aggressively trying to get the inside line and exit of Turn One but I cannot vanish."

"I had Alonso challenge on the inner side and I was unable to see him any more. I wanted to provide room for him and then Piastri steered inward and the collision was unavoidable."

Aftermath and Team Response

The team will review the incident with their racers but not until the event weekend. Both cars needed significant repairs before qualifying session at 22:00 BST on Saturday.

Stella said: "Overall displeased but we take it on the chin, we are now focusing on fixing the vehicles, there is a lot to do and then we will resume the weekend from there."

"Our team holds a strong position from our performance point of view so I hope we have the possibility to race, compete fairly and utilize our capabilities."

"The points are the key thing, I prefer not to talk about mal-intent, just prudence. A bit more prudence would be beneficial for all involved."

Standings Impact

The race was won by Red Bull's Verstappen, who closed in on both McLaren drivers in the championship - he is now 55 points behind Piastri and 33 adrift of the Briton.

Stella said: "The consequence is what the numbers says - we lost eight points with both drivers, but we concentrate on ourselves. We have a highly capable car and two strong racers. We look forward to just some standard competition."

Verstappen said he was approaching the title race one event at a time.
