A uniquely yellow-colored apartment block in the background helped us locate the video.

Our team is analyzing video footage and photographs shared earlier today that purport to show the aftermath of a alleged car bomb explosion that Russian officials state killed a high-ranking military officer in Moscow.

Russian authorities confirmed that Lt Gen Fanil Sarvarov was in the car that detonated and that he later died to his injuries. A probe is currently ongoing.

The initial step to verify the location of where the pictures were from relied on social media reports indicating the explosion occurred on Yasenevaya Ulitsa in the southern district of the Russian capital.

Our analysis employed panoramic mapping services on digital map platforms and the local mapping service Yandex Maps to corroborate the unique yellow hue of a adjacent residential complex seen in the video.

Identifying other buildings, streetlights and the road configuration confirmed the exact location the pictures were captured.

We also checked that the videos were recent and that the visuals had not been digital alteration.
