An Story of Surprising Generosity: When a University Student Allowed Me to Sleep on Her Dormitory Floor

During the year 2006, I traveled to the Australian capital for an interview at a medical college. My plan was I would book lodging upon arrival, but upon reaching the city, a big convention was taking place and all the budget hostels and budget accommodation had no vacancies.

As a visitor from the city-state of Singapore, I considered maybe I could spend the night at the terminal – but quickly found Canberra airport, unlike Singapore’s, does not operate around the clock. Not knowing what my next move should be and getting a bit desperate, I boarded a city-bound bus and started wandering in the direction of the casino, reasoning I might spend the night in a place that stayed open 24/7. This was not ideal in the best shape for nailing a crucial interview the next day, but as a broke student, a pricey hotel was out of reach.

The world needs more folks with such compassion.

Apparently, I appeared lost as a young woman spotted me loitering in downtown and wondered if I was OK. I shared my predicament and right away she offered I was welcome to sleep on the ground at her university residence at the Australian National University – a perfect solution, considering that was where the important interview was the following day. She even offered me some free dinner: one stuffed baguettes she had from her work shift. I had access to a hot shower and a secure location and safe to sleep.

Looking back, I can appreciate what a big chance she took as a young woman allowing a guy who was a complete stranger sleep on her floor. At that time I operated under my male privilege bubble and did not consider to the potential danger. Now, as a father, it astounds me she offered that help – and remain incredibly thankful.

I didn’t end up study at ANU, and I never saw that kind stranger again, but her act remains etched in my mind her selfless deed of human compassion. It is my wish the universe has rewarded her act of kindness many times over. We could all use more individuals who show such kindness.
